Celebration Project: CDEC1358

For my Celebration Project, I chose 1st grade and the State of Texas as the topic we will learn about. The 4 visual experiences/art activities will be: 1) Play dough sculpture 2) The Texas State Song 3) Bluebonnet painting 4) Texas State Flag craft

Texas is the second largest state. Because of its size, the weather is extremely varied. The name "Texas" means friends. The capital city of Texas is Austin. The mockingbird is the state bird. And the pecan tree is the state tree. The longhorn is the state mammal. And the armadillo is the state small mammal.

1) Texas play dough sculpture
For the first activity, we will study the shape of the State of Texas. We will also go over the major cities and capital of Texas and locate them on the map. These cities include Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and the capital in Austin. Houston is the largest city in Texas. Next, we will create a sculpture of Texas using play dough and label major cities & the capital with star stickers. For fun, we will also find cities on the map that we have lived in.

2) The Texas State Song
For the second activity, we will learn the words to the state song. As a class, we will all sing the Texas State Song "Texas, Our Texas".

"Texas, Our Texas"
Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State!
Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great!
Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test
O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.
(chorus)
Texas, O Texas! your freeborn single star,
Sends out its radiance to nations near and far,
Emblem of Freedom! it set our hearts aglow,
With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.
(chorus)
Texas, dear Texas! from tyrant grip now free,
Shines forth in splendor, your star of destiny!
Mother of heroes, we come your children true,
Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.

Chorus
God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.
God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

3) Bluebonnet painting
For the third activity, we will create a painting of a bluebonnet. The bluebonnet is the Texas state flower. Bluebonnets are typically blue and white and grow wild only in Texas. We will look at photos of bluebonnets then create our own painting using only paint and our hands and fingerprints.

4) Texas State Flag craft
For the fourth activity, we will construct a craft of the state flag. The Texas State Flag is known as the Lone Star Flag because of the single white five point star. It includes three colors: red, white and blue. Red represents bravery. White represents purity and liberty. Blue represents loyalty. We will look at photos of the state flag. Using small pieces of red, white and blue construction paper and glue, we will create the Texas State Flag on paper.
